April 2009 - California Buckwheat

Buckwheat
Eriogonum fasciculatum
The flowers of the California or East Mojave Buckwheat plant are tiny but grow together in lovely dense, whitish-pink clusters that are produced on leaf-less stalks. As they age, the flowers go to a more burnt-orange in colour. Look for this shrub on dry hillsides, in washes and canyons in parts of the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts of the US and Mexico. They are favourites of many butterflies.
