July 2008 - Ten-lined June Beetle

Ten-lined June Beetle
Polyphylla decemlineata

With its ten lines, it's clear to see how this beetle was named. You'll find this creature in the forests and woods of the Rocky Mountain provinces and states as well as the Southwest USA. It's about 1-1.5 inches (25-35 mm) long, with brownish hair under the thorax. Although called a June bug, adults emerge in July.
