August 2007 - Green Lacewing

Green Lacewing
Chrysopa coloradensis
With its graceful pair of lace-like wings, the Green Lacewing receives the honour of being this month's bug of the month. Measuring only about 10mm (.5 inches) it is indeed a very small insect and so is often not noticed, despite being very common.
Like ladybugs and hover flies, they are considered to be "friends of the gardener" as they love to munch down aphids. If you happen to catch one, beware of its smell.

Be sure to also watch out for a close relative, the Brown Lacewing, shown on the right.
