Photographing Small Birds

Capturing that little bird in a photograph needs a very big lens and a lot of luck and of course, patience.  But perhaps we can help a little.

Looking through this site and All Things Natural Restaurant, you will have seen the small feeders that attract so many birds.  Now a little tip on how to get a more natural photo because who wants to frame a photograph of a bird eating from a block of wood or a plastic feeder?

Cut a couple of small twigs from a flowering shrub and secure it near to the food source.

Check that the background is decent and that the position will allow for a decent photograph.  This first shot shows how it was set up for the photos below.  We now have a place for the birds to perch on while they wait their turn at the suet feeder.  You just have to be ready with your camera.
