#20 - The Red Crossbill
|
The Red Crossbill, Loxia curvirostra, is a medium-sized (6 in/15 cm) finch found in forests
throughout western Northern America and across the Canadian Shield to the east coast.
|
Male Red Crossbill
The most obvious characteristic of the Red Crossbill is its bill, its large upper mandible, crossing over the lower mandible. It looks a little awkward at first, but is an ideal adaptation which helps to Red Crossbill to easily extract seeds from pine cones. As a result, food is always easy to find.

Juvenile Red Crossbill
Female Red Crossbill
The male bares the red colours which gives the Red Crossbill its name. The female (right) is more yellow and dusty brown and has dark wings. The young (left) have the crossed bill and streaked colouring.
|
Female Red Crossbill
The Red Crossbill is known to breed at almost anytime of the year, especially when food is in abundance. Often, they will gather in flocks moving around in search of pinecones.
