September 2010 - Baja Fairy Duster
|
Baja Fairy Duster, Calliandra californica
Baja Fairy Duster, Calliandra californica
With an almost magical name, the Baja Fairy Duster is a fascinating plant and an easy one to recognize and remember. It has the most amazing scarlet- or orange-red flowers that look like small dusters.  As its common name suggests, it is a native plant to Mexico’s Baja peninsula, but is now found in many parts of the southwest US.  It grows to a height of almost 5 ft/ 2 m.  Its leaves are only about 1 in/2.5 cm long.
