One-Eyed Sphinx Moth, Smerinthus cerisyi
This month's bug is a moth, the One-Eyed Sphinx.  There is no mistaking the bull's eye pattern on the hind wing, resulting in its interesting common name.

This moth is uncommon, although with its northern range being British Columbia across to Newfoundland and south to Georgia it does have a large range.  The adults are nocturnal and come to lights readily. The species is seen mostly in the summer months with the caterpillars growing up on the leaves of willows and poplars.
