February 2009 - Cinnabar Moth
|
Cinnabar Moth
Tyria jacobaeae

This stunning creature is a day-flying moth, originally from Europe but has been introduced to North America and other parts of the world.  Cinnabar caterpillars feed on ragworts which are rich in alkaloid poisons.  The caterpillars store the poison and it gets passed on to the adult moth stage.  Predators take note of the red warning colours and stay away.
