River and mountains in Kootenay National Park.

Two great rivers flow through Kootenay National Park: the Kootenay and the Vermillion.

Running through the centre is the Banff-Windermere or Kootenay Parkway which provides numerous access points to hiking trails, wildlife viewing spots and scenic lookouts.

Established in 1920, Kootenay become Canada's 10th national park. Located in eastern British Columbia, Kootenay stretches like a long, narrow arm from the continental divide down to the Columbia River Valley.

It borders other preserved zones such as Banff and Yoho National Parks, and Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park which together preserve thousands of square miles of important wilderness.
