#33 - The Ring-necked Duck

The most conspicuous feature of the Ring-necked Duck, Aythya collaris, is the white ring on its bill.
The cinnamon collar on its neck after which is was named is not visible except when very close up.

The Ring-necked Duck is a relatively common, medium-sized duck. It feeds on plants, mollusks, insects, small fish and other aquatic life. |

Both male (left) and female have white rings on their bills with male's also having a white outline. The male has a purple-black head, gray bill, white breast and yellow eyes. The female is much duller, being pale brown with a dark brown back, dark bill, and brown eyes with white rings around them. Both sexes have a peaked head. |

The Ring-necked Duck is about 14-18 in/36-46 cm long and has a wingspan of 25-30 in/63-76 cm. It nests and breeds in marshes and wetlands across the boreal forest of North America. |
