The Northern Pintail, Ansas acuta, is an elegant dabbling duck.

One of the most striking features of the male Northern Pintail is is long, slender tail. The male also has a chocolate-coloured head with a white stripe and a white breast. |

The female Northern Pintail (right) lacks the striking plumage of the male and is mostly marbled-brown in colour. Both sexes have gray bills and legs and brown eyes. During non-breeding, the male is somewhat duller that during breeding time. The Northern Pintail feeds on vegetation, algae, seeds and insects by dabbling. |

The Northern Pintail breeds across northern North America and over winters in warmer coastal areas and Central America. It is a fast-flying bird, 25 in/64 cm long (the female is smaller) with a wingspan of 34 in/86 cm. |
