June 2008 - Great Blue Heron |
| |
|
| Ardea herodias |
| The magnificent Great Blue Heron is a common wading bird found across most of North America and a very rare vagrant to Europe. Standing 91 to 137 cm (36 to 54 inches) tall, one can't help but be impressed with its stunning plumage. |
 |
Great Blue Herons stand patiently in the water, waiting and watching for passing fish, crabs or frogs. They stab their prey and then swallow it.
In the Spring they nest in colonies which can be very noisy (and smelly!)
