February 2009 - Heermann's Gull

Heermann's Gull
Larus heermanni
Correctly identifying seagulls can often be challenging, but the Herrmann’s Gull is an easy one to spot thanks to its gray body, blackish wings, black legs and red, black-tipped bill.

Heermann's Gull
Herrmann's Gulls are found along the Pacific coast of North America, from Mexico to British Columbia.  Interestingly, over 90% of the current population nest and breed on Isla Rasa, a protected reserve in the Gulf of California, Mexico.  They then migrate morth in July and begin the return journey in December and arriving back in March.
