Cattle Egret
Bubulcus ibis
The Cattle Egret is a North American immigrant from Africa. This small white heron stands about 20 ins (50 cm) and is the most common heron in many of the southern states, breeding from California, east to the Great Lakes and Maine and down to the Gulf Coast. It feeds on insects in pastures (hence its name) and wetlands.
