September 2007 - Seaside Rein Orchid

Seaside Rein Orchid
Platanthera greenei
For our monthly flower selection for September, we have chosen a late-flowering orchid.

When the grasses and the spring flowers are brown and shriveled, the Seaside Rein Orchid comes into its own. The leaves quickly shrivel and die off and the sturdy flower stalk carries numerous white and green flowers typical of this type of orchid.
Seaside Orchid
Watch out for this beautiful perennial in grassy areas and rocky slopes in coastal B.C. and Washington.
