#11 - The Rock Squirrel
|
As its name suggests, the Rock Squirrel, Spermophilus variegatus, is at home scurrying
around rocky areas, cliffs, canyon walls and piles of boulders.
|
Rock Squirrel
The Rock Squirrel is also very able tree climber. It feeds primarily on nuts, seeds and fruit but also consumes carrion, eggs, young birds, insects and other invertebrates.

The Rock Squirrel is a ground squirrel but with its long bushy tail it resembles more of a tree squirrel than a ground squirrel. It is generally mottled brownish-gray in colour with a buff underside. Its total length is 17-21 in ( 43-53 cm) which includes its tail that is about the same length as the body and head.

The Rock Squirrel is found across the southwest, ranging from Colorado, west to southern Nevada, east to Oklahoma and south to Mexico.
