The Black-Crowned Night-Heron, Nycticorax nycticorax, is a medium sized
heron found swamps, marshes and wetlands in many parts of the world.

It is characterized by its black crown and back, red eyes, dark, short bill, white underparts, short tail, short yellow legs and yellow feet. It measures 25-28 in/63 - 71 cm long with a wingspan of about 44 in/112 cm. |

The Black-Crowned Night-Heron is generally nocturnal. It is omnivorous feeding on all sorts of plant material as well as frogs, rodents, crustaceans, fish, mollusks and even young birds. During the day, it roosts in trees. |

Juveniles are much difference in appearance, being darker in colour and with streaks on the breast and white spots on the back. |
