July 2008 - Bigelow's Aster

Bigelow's Aster
Machaeranthera Bigelovii

Asters are members of the sunflower family (Asteraceae). The Bigelow's Aster starts to grow in early summer and reaches its full splendor in the autumn. The plant grows to over 2 feet tall (.6m), with a strong central stem, small slender leaves but with lots of attention grabbing stunning flowers. Watch for them when you're travelling along the roads of Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona.
