February 2008 - Indian Plum

Indian Plum
Oemleria cerasiformis
Indian Plum is one of the first plants in the west coast of North America to leaf out and flower. A member of the Rose Family, it grows as a shrub to a small tree. It produces blue-black cherry-like fruit, which is very bitter.

The early flowering of the Indian Plum is a sure sign that winter is on its way out and Spring's around the corner - at least on the west coast!

Many thanks to Agnes L. from Victoria, B.C. for suggesting this month's flower.
